In August 2015, #65 Will Petschenig an overage defenseman in the Ontario Hockey League joined the Saginaw Spirit after winning a Memorial Cup with the Oshawa Generals. By September, the newly acquired member of the Spirit decided to make an impact on the community, larger than he ever expected.
'A Heart Like Mine' was started by the Will to reach out to children and families who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Like these families, Petschenig himself is grieving after losing his father, Dan Petschenig suddenly at age 50 in October 2013.
To honor his father, 'A Heart Like Mine' was started to share and create memories with others, similar to those created between a father and son while a young Petschenig was growing up in Ottawa, Ontario. Attending and enjoying the game of lacrosse. ‘A Heart Like Mine’ has continued throughout Ontario and even in Switzerland. Petschenig has always had a love for hockey and lacrosse. Hockey during the fall and winter months, while lacrosse is during the spring and summer months. This summer, in 2019, the program is partnering with the Clarington Green Gaels Jr. B Lacrosse Club (Garnet B. Rickard Arena Bowmanville, Ontario) and with the Brooklin Lacrosse Club. Brooklin is the Senior “A” Mens club playing in Major Series Lacrosse (MSL). The home games are at Iroquois Park Sport Center in Whitby, Ontario.
WHO IS THIS PROGRAM FOR?
‘Will’s Warriors’ are kids who have experienced the loss of a close loved one. The program is for children who have been going through a difficult time since the passing of their loved one.
A typical game night consists of Petschenig meeting with the family before the game, some souvenirs, a dressing room tour and post game photos with the players. After the night out, Petschenig enjoys supporting the kids at whatever they are involved with in the community.
