By Mark Stehlin
On January 12, 2025 management and coaches from the Brooklin Lacrosse Club (BLC) gathered with the six other Major Series Lacrosse teams (MSL) in Whitby, ON for the 2025 entry draft. BLC General Manager, Gavin Prout had secured two picks in the first round which he used for Will MacLeod and Nicholas Volkov. He also owned two picks in the second round, the first of those was used to select Justin Lee from the Mimico Mountaineers of the Ontario Junior Lacrosse League (OJLL.
Prout said he was happy to select Lee, adding “Justin currently is playing at the University of Albany and helped them win an American East Championship. He is a tall athletic transition player who can run the floor and score. He will bring speed and athleticism to the team and I am looking forward to him helping the BLC for many years to come.
When asked about his thoughts on the draft he said, “I was following the draft results on the MSL Twitter page. It was an awesome feeling to be selected and I see this as a natural step after my Junior career. I know there are some big names on BLC, and I look forward to learning from those guys.”
Lee finished his Junior career with Mimico in 2024. The team finished 3rd overall with a 12-8 regular season. In the playoffs, the Mountaineers beat Brampton and Peterborough in the first two rounds and met Orangeville in the finals going down 4-3 in a tight best of seven series. In a combined 33 games played in regular season and playoffs, Lee netted 33 goals, added 72 assists for 105 points, good for 13th overall.
He described his Junior career as, “a real family feel, I remember the alumnae came to the games and it felt great to be part of this awesome experience.”
He is currently a Junior with the University of Albany Great Danes men’s lacrosse program. The Great Danes were crowned the 2024 America East Men’s Lacrosse Champions.
Lee said, “we went 6-1 last year and won a championship. I think we can fight for even bigger things this year”.
He added, “we look good, even though we lost some key pieces to graduation, we have a great group of D guys and a good number of starters on offense.”
Once he completes his collegiate obligations for the season, he will join his new teammates at Iroquois Park Sports Centre for camp prior to the 18-game MSL regular season.
